MAC Wrestler of the Week
Quentin Keyes, Ohio University - Junior, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (Walsh Jesuit High School)
Junior Quentin Keyes had a tremendous weekend for the Bobcats while wrestling at 133 pounds. At the 2009 Bobcat Duals last Friday, December 4, Keyes posted an undefeated 3-0 record and helped lead the Bobcats (3-0) to an undefeated record as well, earning one-sided victories over The Citadel (32-3), Appalachian State (26-9) and Cleveland State (41-4). In the first dual meet of the day, Keyes defeated Jordan Dix of The Citadel by technical fall (16-0). Keyes then beat Appalachian State's nationally-ranked Frank Cellorrio by a major decision (14-5) before completing his day with a 17-1 technical fall victory over Zech Huff of Cleveland State. With Friday's three wins, Keyes is now the owner of a 5-2 record.
Phillip Joseph, Eastern Michigan - Freshman, Lapeer, Mich. (Lapeer East High School)
Freshman Phillip Joseph competed in his first-career regular season bout last Thursday, Dec. 3, and recorded a pin of Michigan State's Nick Palmieri at the 1:27 mark of the 184 lbs. bout to give the Eagles an early 6-3 lead. Joseph improves his record to 9-5 on the young season, which includes an 8-5 mark in unattached matches. Joseph was one of only two Eagles to record victories on the evening in a 26-9 setback.
Bryan Deutsch, Northern Illinois - Junior, Columbia City, Ind. (Columbia City High School)
Junior Bryan Deutsch improved to 8-1 on the season after defeating Northwestern's Kevin Bialka by pin, 5:51, in the Huskies' 24-13 victory over the Wildcats in Northern Illinois annual Showcase Meet on Dec. 3. With the Huskies trailing 10-9 heading into the 157-pound match, Deutsch opened with a 6-5 advantage after the first period, but Bialka tied the contest 7-7 after the second period. Deutsch executed a defensive pin 51 seconds into the third period to score the win and give Northern Illinois a 15-10 lead. Deutsch's victory was the turning point of the meet as the Huskies scored wins in two of the last three matches en route to the win.
John-Martin Cannon, Buffalo - Sophomore, Brockport, N.Y. (Brockport High School)
John-Martin Cannon had a very impressive outing at this year's Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, capturing seventh place in the 165-pound weight class. As an unseeded competitor, the sophomore captured back-to-back opening victories over seeded wrestlers on Friday. Cannon opened the day with one of the best wins of his career as he defeated sixth-seed Eren Civan of Columbia, 5-3. On Saturday, Cannon opened the day by dropping an 8-3 decision to sixth nationally-ranked and 2009 NCAA All-American Andy Rendos of Bucknell. Following his loss to Rendos, Cannon found himself facing a familiar opponent in the bout for seventh-place, 11th-seed Oscar Huntley of Navy. In Cannon's string of opening upsets on Friday, the sophomore dominated Huntley in a 9-3 decision. On Saturday, the result was the same as Cannon once again dominated the four-time Virginia state placewinner in an 11-5 decision to record a seventh place-finish.
