He also helped the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.96) and 800-yard freestyle relay (7:00.25) teams to second place finishes and both of those times were fastest to date in the MAC this year.

Whited helped guide the Ball State men's swimming & diving team to a second-place finish at the 2009 House of Championships Invitational at IUPUI by collecting a pair of first-place finishes in the diving events. On the three-meter board, Whited posted a score of 254.40 to beat out IUPUI's Mitchell Gauger by 2.6 points. Against the Buckeyes, Gunnels was the RedHawks' top finisher in the 50-yard freestyle (21.56) and the 200 backstroke (1:52.67), both personal best times. He also led off Miami's best 200-yard medley relay squad that swam the distance in 1:36.65.
