CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Akron men’s and women’s indoor track and field squads were both picked as preseason favorites to win the 2009 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field championship, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
The Zips track & field program is coming off its most successful campaign in 2008. The women’s program won the MAC Indoor title, while the men’s program finished a program-best second at the 2008 MAC Indoors.
Akron’s Auston Papay and Stevie Large are both coming off a 2008 season which both earned All-American recognition. Papay was All-American, placing eighth at the NCAA Indoors in the shot put, while Large, a four-time MAC Field Performer of the Year, was All-American in the weight throw, placing fifth at the NCAA Indoors.
On the women’s side, Western Michigan was tabbed second followed by Miami and Central Michigan. Kent State was picked to finish fifth, while Ball State was selected to place sixth. Buffalo, Toledo, Ohio, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois rounded out this year’s preseason poll.
On the men’s side, Akron is followed by Eastern Michigan in second and Kent State in third. Buffalo and Central Michigan round out this year’s poll in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The 2009 MAC Men and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship will take place in Kent, Ohio, and will be hosted by Kent State on Feb. 27-28.
