Updated 11/6/2008

CLEVELAND, OHIO -- The Mid-American Conference announced its 2008 Field Hockey All-MAC teams, Freshman of the Year, Player of the Year and Coach of the Year at the Field Hockey Banquet in Kent, Ohio this evening.

Capturing the Freshman of the Year honors is Debbie Bell of Kent State. Bell scored a pair of goals in Saturday’s win at Missouri State, giving her five goals in her last three games. Bell leads the MAC in points (43) and goals (20) and ranks seventh in the nation with 1.05 goals per game. She also leads the conference with seven game-winning goals this season.

Central Michigan’s Samantha Sandham was named this year’s Player of the Year.  Sandham led the Chippewas this season with 11 goals (t-third in the MAC), nine assists (fourth), 31 points (fourth) and 84 shots (second). She is Central’s all-time leader in assists with 34 career helpers. She became the third player in CMU history to eclipse 100 career points this season. Sandham (102 points) is two points shy of becoming the second leading scorer in school history. She is only the second Chippewa in program history to win the award.

Kent State’s Kathleen Schanne was named Coach of the Year as voted on by the league’s head coaches for the second straight season.  Schanne led the Flashes to one of their biggest turnaround seasons in school history in 2007 with a 7-3 second place finish.  This season she led KSU a conference regular season title with a 9-1 MAC mark, the program’s best conference record since 2000.  Schanne’s teams have totaled 34 victories in three seasons.
