KSU Women's Golf Falls Short Of Second Straight NCAA Championships Berth

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Kent State University women's golf team fell just short of an opportunity to reach the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships for a second straight season, finishing the 54-hole 2007 NCAA Central Regionals in 10th place Saturday (May 12) at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich.

 

The Golden Flashes combined to shoot a 313 as a team over the final 18 holes after compiling a 297 Thursday (May 10)  and a 298 Friday (May 11). The 2007 Mid-American Conference Champions finished the NCAA Regionals at 56-over par with a total score of 908.

 

The University of Southern California won the event at 17-over par with a total of 869 after carding a 298 Saturday. Along with the Trojans, the the University of Georgia, Texas Chrisitan University, Indiana University, the University of Arizona, Vanderbilt University, the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University qualified for the 2007 NCAA Championships by being in the top-eight spots on the leaderboard. The NCAA Championships are scheduled to be held May 22-25 at the the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

 

Junior Tara Delaney was the high finisher for Kent State, tying with eight others for 24th place at 13-over par. The 2007 MAC Golfer of the Year from Carlow, Ireland, fired a 77 Saturday to go along with scores of 75 and 74, bringing her total to 226.

 

Vanderbilt's Jacqui Concolino took the individual championship with a total score of 208, good enough for five-under par.

 

Maddi Swaney rose from a tie for 36th place to tie for 24th along with Delaney. The sophomore out of Marietta, Ohio, shot a final-round 76 to make her total after recording scores of 72 and 78 in her first NCAA Central Regionals.

 

Sophomore Kirby Dreher dropped back to a six-way tie for 40th after entering the day in a tie for 23. The Ft. St. John, British Columbia, Canada, native totaled a 228 after following up scores of 76 and 72 with an 80, putting her at 15-over par.

 

2007 MAC Medalist Kira Meixner tied for 71st place at 23-over par with a total of 236. Meixner, a junior from Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, tied with Kristin Ingram of the University of Arkansas after beginning the day in a tie for 27th place. Meixner shot an 87 Saturday after recording previous rounds of 74 and 75.

 

Senior Karen Delaney tied for 81st with two others, improving her final standing by one spot on Saturday. The Carlow, Ireland, native shot an 80 to go along with scores of 82 and 77, putting her at 26-over par with a total of 239.
