Kent State Picked as Preseason Gymnastics Favorite

Updated 1/4/2011
Cleveland, Ohio - After qualifying for regionals as a team for the third consecutive year in 2010, the Kent State Golden Flashes have been picked to win both the 2011 Mid-American Conference gymnastics regular season title as well as the 2011 MAC Gymnastics Championship. Results of the poll were announced today by the conference office and were voted on by the league's head coaches.

Kent State captured yet another regular season MAC crown in 2010, finishing 6-0 against league competition. The Golden Flashes are led by seniors Christine Abou-Mitri and Christina Lenny, a two-time First Team All-MAC performer who will be looking to expand on her three individual MAC titles, including two a year ago on vault and floor exercise. Abou-Mitri was awarded the MAC Gymnast of the Year in 2010 after leading the team with a scoring average of 38.942 in the all-around and 9.754 on the balance beam. On the year she posted 19 first-place finishes.

The Golden Flashes will be challenged by Central Michigan who finished second in the conference a year ago, then defeated Kent State to earn its first MAC Championship since 2004. Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, Ball State, Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan round out the poll.

The 2011 MAC Gymnastics Championship will be held at Central Michigan University on March 19.
