TOLEDO, OH -- University of Toledo junior to-be Tammy Clelland has earned a spot in a sectional qualifier on the East Coast next week, giving her the opportunity to compete for a berth in the 2006 United States Women's Open Championship. Clelland qualified for this event by shooting an 82 at a local qualifier on May 18 at the Pittsburgh Field Club.
A 2005-06 first-team All-MAC selection, Clelland will play 36 holes at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, RI on Tuesday, June 13. Clelland will be competing with 24 other individuals for four spots in the championship.
"This is very exciting for all of us and Tammy will be the first collegiate player I've coached to make it to the sectional qualifier stage," UT Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. "I think she has a great shot of making it to the U.S. Open, because she's playing really well right now."
The 61st U.S. Women's Open Championship will be held at Newport Country Club in Newport, RI on June 29-July 2, 2006.
