Tyler Merkel won the adidas Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind., Saturday and Sunday. Merkel marked his first collegiate career victory with a 71-68-70=209. The victory marked his second top-20 finish of the season, as he won the tournament by one stroke over two players in the 78-player field.

Freshman Charlie Bull had the best performance of his young Akron career, finishing in a three-way tie for second place with a score of 2-over 215 at the UK Bluegrass Invitational over the weekend. Bull helped the Zips to a third-place finish, assisting in Akron's seven-spot jump after finishing the first round in tenth place. Bull led the Zips on a rain-soaked day one, carding a round of 1-under 70 and was tied for fourth place. His round of 70 was his second-lowest of the spring and is two shots off his career-low round of 68 (March 7, 2011). He followed that up with his second-consecutive score of 1-under 70 during the second round, which concluded on Sunday morning after play was halted due to darkness on Saturday. He closed out day two with a round of 4-over 75 during the final round, just two shots back of the tournament winner.

Wes Gates, a sophomore from Novi, Mich., produced his fourth top-20 finish in eight tournaments this season when he tied for 18th place last weekend at the 2011 UK Bluegrass Invitational. Gates shot par (142) through the first two rounds, carding individual scores of 72 and 70. The round of 70 tied for his second-best round of the season.
