Central Michigan Takes Home Second Straight MAC Gymnastics Title

Updated 3/19/2011

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - For the second consecutive year and the 12th time overall, the Central Michigan Chippewas are MAC gymnastics champions after fending off the Kent State Golden Flashes, 195.900-195.050, inside McGuirk Arena at Central Michigan University on Saturday.

The Chippewas' Kristin Teubner scored a 9.900 on the beam to finish all alone in first while her 9.875 on the floor exercise was good for a three-way tie atop the standings with teammate Cheryl Conlin and Ball State's Nicole Allen. Teubner narrowly edged out fellow award recipient Christina Lenny of Kent State for the all-around title with a 39.325 to Lenny's 39.200. The two had been named co-gymnasts of the year in pre-championship voting. Lenny and Allen also shared a title on vault with identical scores of 9.900.

It was hardly a one-woman show for CMU throughout the day as numerous Central Michigan gymnasts made their presence felt. Freshman Brittany Petzold claimed an individual title all to herself on the parallel bars with a score of 9.850 while senior Andrea de la Garza had second-place finishes on both bars and beam with a 9.800 and 9.825, respectively.

Western Michigan continued to work its way back up the MAC rankings under Coach of the Year Dave Kuzara, wrapping up the 2011 season with a third-place finish of 194.150 while Ball State finished in fourth with a 193.175 behind the dynamic performances of Nicole Allen.

Bowling Green made a strong push up the standings after a seventh-place finish in the MAC Championship a year ago, scoring a 192.900 to wind up in fifth while Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois placed sixth and seventh, respectively, with totals of 192.425 and 191.475.
