MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team made short work of No. 6 Chicago State, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Championships on Thursday morning. The No. 3 Broncos (19-10) advance to the semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. to play tournament host and second-seeded Ball State.
Junior Casey Cullen and sophomore Pablo Olivarez won the race for first off with an 8-0 win at No. 3, followed by junior Kazuya Komada and sophomore Zeyad Montasser with an 8-0 win at No. 2. Freshman Simon Blomberg won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles in the first match off the court, quickly followed by Olivarez with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 and Cullen with his own shut out victory at No. 4. The remaining matches were stopped when the match was decided.

WMU advances to play #2 Ball State on Friday at 2 p.m.
Muncie, Ind. - A sluggish start to its singles matches didn't stop Toledo's men's tennis team from taking a 4-2 win over Northern Illinois on Thursday in the MAC Tournament Quarterfinals, hosted by Ball State. Toledo (13-14), the tournament's fourth-seed, advances to face top-seed Buffalo at 10 a.m. Friday at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center in the semifinals.
After taking the doubles point, UT's singles players dropped the opening set in five of their six matches. But the Rockets battled back and sealed the victory with Sven Burus' 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory at second singles.
Bryant Dudzik also recovered for a singles victory in the sixth flight, recording a 2-6, 7-6 (5-0), 6-1 decision. Knot Likitkumchorn won in straight sets, scoring a 6-4, 6-3 victory at third singles.
The Rockets cruised to the match's opening point. At second doubles, Likitkumchorn and Leo Sarria earned an 8-2 victory, while Dudzik teamed with Terence Weigand for an 8-3 win at third doubles to give UT the 1-0 edge. NIU, the No. 5 seed, took victories at fourth and fifth singles and evened the score at 2-2 before Dudzik and Burus' wins closed the match.
During the regular season, the Rockets won the doubles point but dropped a 4-3 decision at Buffalo on March 27. Aleksandar Elezovic and Likitkumchorn won their singles matches in that contest.
