MAC Wrestler of the Week (two honorees)
Nic Bedelyon ? Kent State
Sophomore ? Lewistown, Pa. (Indian Valley HS)
Bedelyon avenged an early season loss to Central Michigan’s ninth-ranked Scotti Sentes Thursday (Feb, 19). Bedelyon led from start to finish and won 9-3. He scored a takedown in every period, added two near fall points in the second and had the riding point while only allowing three escapes. Kent State would go on to defeat Central Michigan 18-14 for the regular season Mid-American Conference title. The match was Bedelyon’s 50th win of his career and he is now 23-7 in 2008-09, winning 17 out of his last 20 matches.
Dakota Greenhaw ? Northern Illinois
RS-Sophomore Monett, Mo. (Monett HS)
With Northern Illinois' dual meet against Buffalo tied at 15-15, Greenhaw stepped onto the mat and pinned Brett Correll in the second period to give the Huskies their first MAC win of the season. The win was especially sweet for Greenhaw, was wrestling in just his second match since the season began Nov. 8 at the Pointer Open.
Sophomore Kevin Smith ? Buffalo
Versus MAC opponent Northern Illinois, the Bulls welcomed back Kevin Smith to the lineup. Smith did not have an easy task ahead of him, facing the fourth ranked wrestler in the MAC, Tristen DeShazer of the Huskies. Coming into the match, DeShazer had 15 falls to his name with four against nationally top-ranked wrestlers. At the end of the first period, Smith and Deshazer were tied at 2-2. For the remainder of the match, Smith was able to keep DeShazer of the scoresheet. Smith scored an escape in the second for a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. In the third, Smith was able to score a takedown and a two-point nearfall for an 8-2 decision. On Sunday, sophomore Smith wrestled in his second match back after missing three previous matches due to an upper body injury. Smith collected a 3-1 decision over Binghamton’s Mike Kleeman, extending the Bulls’ lead to 6-0 in the match.
Trevor Stewart ? Central Michigan
Senior ? Canton, Mich. (Catholic Central HS)
Stewart, ranked 12th nationally at 165 pounds, scored bonus points in winning both of his matches last week. He posted a 10-0 major decision over Kent State's Obie Simpson on Thursday, a victory that gave CMU a 10-9 lead in the team score after trailing 9-0. On Sunday, he pinned Ohio's Steve Wilson in just 2:03. Stewart finished the regular season 4-0 in MAC duals and 21-8 overall.
Chris Jenkins ? Eastern Michigan
R.Jr.- Tecumseh, Mich. (Tecumseh HS)
Jenkins won a 9-5 decision over Ohio's Tim Silvers Friday. The win gave the Eagles their third straight decision in a losing effort to the Bobcats.
Clay Tucker ? Ohio
RS Junior- Martins Ferry, Ohio (Martins Ferry HS)
Tucker once again had a perfect weekend, going 2-0 in the final regular season duals to improve to a team-best 20-14 record and 4-1 in the league. He defeated Eastern Michigan's Josh Moulton in a 7-4 decision Friday and then picked up Ohio's only win over Central Michigan with a 3-2 decision over Eric Cubberly on Sunday.
