West Division Player of the Week

Whitney Evers, Cetntral Michigan, Sr. MB/OH, Little Chute, Wis./ Little Chute

Whitney Evers put together a dominating performance, helping the Chippewas go 2-1 at the VCU Invitational. She registered 41 kills (3.73/set) in just 11 total sets thanks to hitting .500 in the three matches. Her five aces (0.45/game) led all Chippewas, and for her efforts she was named to the All-Tournament team. CMU swept both Maryland and NC State, and took 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Liberty to five sets. 

 

East Division Player of the Week

Kendra Halm, Bowling Green, Sr., MH, Bucyrus, Ohio/Bucyrus 

Senior middle blocker Kendra Halm opened the 2008 season in record breaking style leading the Falcons to a 2-1, record at the Florida State Invitational earning All-Tournament honors. Halm and the Falcons got the 2008 season underway with a sweep over the Stetson Hatters (25-14, 25-22, 25-11 where she posted 10 kills hitting a .500. The Orange and Brown then matched up against host Florida State. Despite the Falcons loss Halm continued to better her play posting a weekend best 14 kills with only two errors hitting a .571. Halm topped her performance against the Seminoles as the Falcons swept the 2007 MEAC Champions, Florida A&M (25-21, 25-15, 25-15). Halm was unstoppable at the net stuffing a career high 14 hitters, a new BGSU record for total blocks in a three set match, also breaking the BGSU record she held for block assists in a three set match with 13. She led the Falcons on offense with seven kills and only one error hitting .400. For the weekend Halm terminated a team high 31 kills hitting a .500 and averaging 3.10 kills per game. On defense at the net Halm also led the Falcons with 18 blocks averaging 1.80 blocks per game. She also recorded four digs, one assist and led the Falcons with 40.5 points. 

 

Additional Player of the Week Nominees

Brionna Patterson, Akron, Jr., OH, Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky

After her stellar opening weekend performance, Patterson was the only Zip to be named to the Northern Arizona Invitational all-tournament team.  She finished the weekend with 54 points, 10 blocks and 20 digs.

 

Elaina Kakatolis, Ball State, Jr., Opposite, Arcanum, Ohio/Arcanum

Elaina Kakatolis was named to the 2008 Comfort Suites Sam Houston Invitational all-tournament team after helping guide BSU to a 2-2 record in the two-day event. Kakatolis logged double-digit kills in three of the four matches, including a season-high 11 in BSU’s victory over the host Bearkats. She also collected at least one block in all four matches, including a season-high three total blocks versus tournament champions Drake.

 

Kristin Bignell, Buffalo, So. MH, Drayton, Ontario/Norwell District 

Bignell helped lead the Bulls to a 1-1 performance during the opening day of the Air Force Invitational. In UB’s win against Kennesaw State, Bignell had 13 kills and just one error in 19 total attempts. 

 

Ashley Mason, Eastern Michigan, Fr., Setter, East Lake, Ohio/Lake Catholic 

Making her collegiate d├ębut, freshman Ashley Mason turned in a solid opening weekend by being named to the William and Mart Tribe Volleyball Invitational, Aug. 29-30. In three matches, Mason averaged 9.75 assists per set, 3.08 digs per set and 0.75 kills per set. Her best match came in the finale versus UMBC, Aug. 30, when Mason notches 49 assists, four kills and 17 digs.

 

Maria Leahy , Miami, Jr., OH, St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy   

Leahy recored 32 kills, 39 digs, 5 assists and a .275 attach percentage and was named to the All-Tournament team at Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Classic.

 

Meagan Schoenrock, Northern Illinois, Jr., OH, Sylvania, Ohio/Northview 

Schoenrock recorded her first career double-double in NIU’s 3-0 win over Cleveland State with 14 kills and 11 digs. She hit .412 with a team-best 15 kills against UCONN.  She finished the weekend with a .298 attack percentage and 46 points.

 

Ellen Herman, Ohio, Jr., OH, Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic 

Joined the team in Hawaii late due to a death in the family, but rebounded to lead the Bobcats in kills, digs and points per set ... Recorded double-figure point totals in each of the weekend’s three matches ... Friday’s 10-dig effort was the fifth double-figure dig outing of her career. 

 

Amber DeWeerdt, Toledo, Fr., OH, Plainfield, IL/North 

Made collegiate debut by being named to all-tournament team at Ohio State's Sports Imports Classic...Led Rockets with 2.75 kills and 0.50 service aces per game...Top match came with 15 kills, eight digs and five aces in 3-2 loss to Youngstown State...Also tied for team lead with 11 kills vs. Xavier and seven kills vs. Ohio State.

 

Jillian Mitchell , Western Michigan, Jr., Setter, Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South 

Jillian Mitchell was named to the Aquafina Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading Western Michigan to a co-first place showing with No. 8 Florida after 3-0 victories over Pacific and UAB, two top-75 teams. With Mitchell setting the table, WMU was the only team to win both its matches in the minimum three sets and allowed the fewest points in the tournament. Mitchell finished the weekend with a tournament high 11.67 assists per set (70) as WMU led the field with 93 total kills and 15.50 kills per set. Mitchell was also strong at the net leading WMU with seven blocks for 1.17 blocks per set. Mitchell started the tournament with 30 assists, four digs and four block assists against Pacific and added 40 assists, eight digs, three blocks assists and two kills, including the match winner, against UAB.
