DES MOINES, Iowa ? University of Akron senior Cadeau Kellley (Cleveland/John Marshall HS) placed seventh in the men’s long jump at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to earn his first, and the school’s 39th, All-American honor.
Kelley, who entered the NCAA Championship with the third-best long jump in the nation, had a leap of 25-5.25 (7.75) Thursday on his first jump in the finals, which held up to for his seventh-place finish.
Kelley was making his second appearance at a NCAA Championship, placing 14th at the 2008 NCAA Indoor meet this past March. He was recently named the USTFCCA Great Lakes Region and the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Male Field Performer of the year, setting UA records in both the long and triple jumps this season. He additionally won the MAC long and triple jump titles during both the 2008 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Kelley owns the UA outdoor and indoor long and triple jump records. In the long jump, he has a career-best leap of 25-5.50 during the indoor season and 26-2.25. In the triple jump, he has career-best leap of 51-1.25 during the indoor season and 50-8.25 during the outdoor season.
The Zips will look to add a 40th overall All-American honor Friday as 2008 NCAA Indoor All-American Stevi Large will be competing the final of the women’s hammer, a event the junior won at both the NCAA Mideast Regional and MAC Outdoor Championships. The women’s hammer final is set for Friday (June 13) at 3:15 pm (CT).
