MAC Releases Men's Track and Field Academic All-MAC Team

Updated 6/14/2011
CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2011 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC team Tuesday, as voted on by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of eight student-athletes were named to the team.

Of the eight athletes to make the squad, four were event champions from the recent 2011 MAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Northern Illinois University. Mike McCall took home the high jump title, narrowly edging Dean Wood of Kent State who was also honored with this award. Matt Pfleger of Kent State had no trouble in the men's hammer throw as he won the competition by nearly ten feet. Brian Smith of Buffalo squeaked past EMU's Princeton Bryson to win the gold in a rain-shortened 200 meters event and Bjorn Johannson of Akron won four of 10 events to claim the decathlon.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
