KENT, Ohio - Kent State junior Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina) was named the national player of the week Monday by Golfweek magazine, two days after claiming medalist honors at the NCAA Central Regional.
Gavier's three-over 219 bested Arizona State's Lizette Salas by two strokes. The stellar field also included five of the nation's top 10 players according to the most recent Golfstat rankings. The tournament win was the second in as many events for Gavier, who earned her first career victory two weeks ago at the MAC Championship.
Her performance helped the Flashes claim their fourth NCAA Championship bid in the last 10 years, as they finished eighth by a single stroke.
The 72-hole NCAA Championship will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. Kent State's previous NCAA appearances came in 2001, 2003 and 2006.
