MAC Wrestler of the Week
Kevin Smith, Buffalo-Junior, Mexico, N.Y. (Mexico High School)
Buffalo junior Kevin Smith won the 133 pound title at the New York State Championships this past weekend, taking all three of his matches. Day one saw him win a 6-2 decision over John Miller of Nassau County. As play resumed Sunday, the Mexico, NY native won a tight 1-0 decision over Seth Ecker of Ithaca. He then easily dispatched of Columbia's Kyle Gilchrist 4-0 to win the bracket. It was his second tournament win of the season, the first coming at the Oklahoma Gold Classic.
Scotti Sentes, Central Michigan-Junior, Fort Myers, Fla. (Riverdale High School)
Central Michigan junior Scotti Sentes pinned Michigan State's Levi Stace in just 1:50 in the Chippewas' 19-18 victory at Michigan State, which marked Central Michigan's 10th straight victory over the Spartans. Sentes improved to 22-6 on the season with his seventh pin. He leads the Chippewas in both victories and pins.
David Wade, Eastern Michigan-Senior, Beavercreek, Ohio (Beavercreek High School)
Eastern Michigan senior heavyweight David Wade was victorious in both of his matches for the Eagles last weekend and continues his hot streak as he has now won six consecutive duals and eight of his last nine bouts overall. Wade succeeded in not surrendering a single point as he shutout Edinboro's Ernest James on Saturday by a score of 4-0. He then followed that up with a win by fall over Clarion's Quintas McCorkle in a time of 6:20 a day later. Wade is 6-1 in duals this season, garnering 30 dual points while giving up just three.
Matt Cathell, Kent State-Senior, Dover, Del. (Caesar Rodney High School)
Kent State senior Matt Cathell ignited a 37-6 victory over Northern Illinois with his 12-4 major decision over Bryan Deutsch in Friday night's opening match. Deutsch was ranked No. 1 in the MAC at 157 and No. 14 according to InterMat. Cathell trailed 4-2 after the opening period, before scoring near fall points on three occasions.
Erik Schuth, Ohio-Senior, Spencerport, N.Y. (Brockport High School)
Ohio senior Erik Schuth powered Ohio to a 6-3 overall mark last week by making short work of two opponents during the Bobcats' victories over Campbell (57-0) and NC State (29-12). Schuth dispatched Campbell's Justin Sparrow in an eye-popping 15 seconds, the team's fastest pin of the year, and later pinned the Wolfpack's KaRonne Jones in one minute, eight seconds. Schuth improved to 14-2 on the season.
