Huskies Defeat Ohio to Advance in MAC Tournament

AKRON, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University softball team kept its conference title hopes alive by defeating No. 4 seed Ohio, 1-0, in its third game of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio Friday.

The Huskies (24-33) scored the lone run of the game in the top of the fourth when Dani Parrish (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) reached on a bunt single and moved into scoring position on a throwing error by the Bobcat third baseman. Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) drove her home on a single down the right field line.

"Dani's seeing the ball really well right now and swinging at good pitches," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "Good things are happening for her."

That would be all the offense sophomore Morgan Bittner (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) and the Huskie defense would need as Bittner scattered four hits and a walk through seven innings while striking out three. She now has 170 strikeouts on the season, topping last year's total of 166 and tying her for third on NIU's single season list for strikeouts.

"She did a good job of keeping getting ahead of the batters and keeping them off balance," Chouinard said of Bittner's performance.

The Huskies will face Miami at 6:30 p.m. CST. NIU defeated Miami in the first game of the tournament and has won all three meetings this year versus the RedHawks.
