TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (25-8) will entertain SEC member Alabama (18-14) in the third round of the WNIT on Tuesday, March 22 in Savage Arena. The opening tip is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Rockets are in the midst of a 14-game home win streak and sport a 15-1 (.938) mark in Savage Arena this season. In two-plus years under Head Coach Tricia Cullop, UT is 39-4 (.907) on its home court, including 16-3 (.842) against non-conference opponents.
The 2010-11 Mid-American Conference champions advanced to the third round for the first time in school history with victories against Delaware, 58-55, last Wednesday, March 16 and Auburn, 67-52, on Saturday.
Sophomore Yolanda Richardson tied her career high with 20 points to lift the Rockets past the Tigers. Richardson added a squad-best eight boards and two rejections in her second start of the season.
The Toledo native has now scored in double digits in four of the last seven games, averaging 10.1 points (53.8 percent, 35-of-65), 6.9 rebounds and 2.4 blocks.
Richardson is also tallying a squad-best 17.0 points, a team-high 8.5 boards and 1.5 rejections per contest in the WNIT, shooting 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field.
Joining Richardson in double figures against UA were senior Melissa Goodall and junior Naama Shafir with 12 points each, helping the Rockets improve to 10-6 (.625) all time in the postseason tourney.
Richardson and Goodall dominated the action on the interior against AU, posting a season-high 48 points in the paint.
All-league performers Shafir and Goodall lead Toledo offensively, scoring 14.2 and 13.3 per game, respectively.
The Crimson Tide qualified for tomorrow's contest by virtue of their wins against Memphis, 80-69, last Thursday, March 17, and Northwestern, 72-70, on Sunday.
Alabama finished with a 5-11 mark in the SEC and features an attack with a pair of players scoring in digits digits led by Tierney Jenkins' 15.7 ppg, 10.6 rpg and 0.9 bpg. The first-team all-league honoree is also contributing a team-best 19.5 points and 9.5 caroms in the postseason.
UA is 8-8 away from home this season and is making its fourth all-time postseason appearance in WNIT.
Toledo and the Crimson Tide will be meeting for the first time. The Rockets are 3-4 (.429) all-time against teams from the SEC.
The winner of tomorrow's contest will take on the winner of Thursday's matchup between MAC member Eastern Michigan and Syracuse. Sites and times for that round will be released at a later date.
