Cleveland, OH --
The Kent State Golden Flashes have been picked to win the 2010 Mid-American Conference gymnastics regular season title and the 2010 MAC Gymnastics Championship, the conference office announced today with the release of its preseason poll, voted on by the league's head coaches.
Kent State is looking to capture its third straight MAC Championship and 12th in the history of the school. Leading the team will be two-time MAC Champion Lydia Barrett, who competes on vault, bars and floor. She looks to become only the sixth KSU gymnast two win three or more conference crowns. Barrett will be joined by beam and floor specialist Carly Conroy, floor specialist Sam Heydlauff (who may also see time on beam and floor her senior season) and vault and beam performer Brittany Kopp. In three seasons, the senior class has helped KSU to a record of 52-21 overall and 17-1 conference mark.
The Golden Flashes also return two-time All-MAC performer and 2008 vault champion, junior all-around performer Christina Lenny. Last season, Lenny became only the sixth KSU gymnast (seventh time overall) to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Junior all-around performer Christine Abou-Mitri, who has the eighth-highest all-around score (39.375) in school history, also will vie for an appearance at the NCAA Championships.
The 2010 MAC Gymnastics Championships will be held at Bowling Green State University on March 27.
