Chillicothe, Ohio ? The Kent State Golden Flashes (42-15) won their seventh Mid-American Conference tournament title in school history and will represent the MAC in the upcoming NCAA Baseball Tournament after defeating the Toledo Rockets (23-30), 5-3, in the MAC Championship game here at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Flashes last won the tournament title in 2007.
Kent State jumped out to an early lead as the Golden Flashes erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ben Klafczynski hit a solo shot that was followed two batters later by another solo homerun off the bat of Greg Rohan. Jason Patton singled to right field and then crossed the plate on a fielding error to put KSU up 3-0. Travis Shaw would cap the inning with a two-run shot over the center field wall to give the Flashes a 5-0 advantage.
Toledo put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning as Dan Sherwood launched a line drive over the left field wall to score Jim Vahalik and made the score 5-2.
Vahalik would go deep in the top of the ninth to make the score 5-3 but it was not enough as the Golden Flashes would hold on for the win.
KSU’s Kyle Smith picked up the win (4-2) for the Golden Flashes, while Toledo’s Matt Sushack took the loss and ends the season with a 2-2 record.
