NASHPORT, Ohio ? Senior Peter Sauerbrei (Kingston, Ontario-Kingston Collegiate) shot two straight 71s for a two-under 142 stroke total to hold down medalist honors to lead defending champion Eastern Michigan University to first place here Friday (May 2) in the first round of the 2008 Mid-American Conference Men’s Golf Championship played at the 7,224 -yard Longaberger Golf Club. Sauerbrei was the lone player in the field to finish the first day under par.

Friday’s first round proved to be a lesson in endurance for the 45-player field with the temperature in the high 70s with a strong northwest wind. The first day of action also featured two 18-hole rounds with 18 more on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.

The Eagles, Ohio and Bowling Green all finished their rounds before play was suspended because of a torrential downpour. Play resumed after a half hour and the first day was completed two hours later.

Head coach Bruce Cunningham’s Eagles shot rounds of 296-288=584 Friday to lead Kent State by two strokes, with the Golden Flashes at 302-284-586. Rounding out the field were Ohio 294-299=593, Ball State 297-301=598, Akron 299-305=604, Northern Illinois 299-305=604, Miami 301-303=604, Bowling Green 303-304=607, and Toledo 306-310=616.
