MAC Anounces Weekly Gymnastics Awards

Gymnast of the Week:


Leah Johnson
Northern Illinois
Junior ● Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS

Johnson won three events all-around, bars, floor and took second in vault in NIU's season-opener. Her 38.800 score in the all-around is the highest all-around score in the MAC this season. She posted a career best score on the bars with a 9.775 and her floor score of 9.825 tied her career best.


Other Nominations:

Breanne Guy, Bowling Green State University
For the second week in a row Guy led her team in the all-around. She set a new personal best on bars with her score of 9.700 and on beam with her score of 9.725. She also posted the best scores on vault and in the all-around. With her all-around score of 38.375 she moves to seventh place in the top all-around performances ever at BGSU.


Courtney Lesson, Western Michigan

Lesson had a solid all-around performance, scoring a career-high 38.6 in the all-around to help the Broncos defeat the University of Illinois-Chicago 191.25 to 190.625. The total was good enough for second place. Lesson also landed a career-high 9.675 in the bars, laying claim to Western Michigan's only individual first place finish. She added another runner-up finish, scoring a 9.75 on the vault.


Jill Kowalski, Kent State
Against Northern Illinois, Kowalski won for the second straight week on beam with a 9.800. Kowalski also recorded a pair of second place finishes with season-high marks of 9.750 on bars and 9.800 on floor. Kowalski leads all MAC individual gymnasts and is sixth in the Central Region with an average score on beam of 9.800. She is also second in the MAC on bars and fourth on floor with average marks of 9.750 and 9.762 respectively.


Katie Simon, Central Michigan
Simon was the top all-arounder for CMU against Iowa. She was CMU's top performer on both the vault and bars and was second on beam. She also finished second overall on vault and bars and third on the all-around.





Specialist of the Week:

Christina Lenny
Kent State
Freshman ● Broadview Heights, OH (Brecksville-Broadview Heights)

Against Northern Illinois, Lenny recorded a career-high 9.850 on vault and won the event for the second straight week. In her collegiate debut on floor, Lenny received a mark of 9.750 and finished tied for fifth. Lenny’s average after two meets on vault of 9.825 leads the MAC and is seventh in the Central Regional.



Other Nominations:


Michelle Luchini, Bowling Green State University
Luchini posted a score of 9.775 on bars, winning her the event. She surpassed her season best which was previously 9.550. This was the only event she competed in, but with her score she helped propel her team to a victory.


Meghan Donovan, Western Michigan

In her only event of the day, freshman Meghan Donovan turned in another clutch performance, totaling a career-high 9.7 on the balance beam. Her second-place effort helped the Broncos' win their second straight, securing a 191.25 to 190.625 win over University of Illinois-Chicago.


Danielle Espinoza, Central Michigan
Espinoza finished first on the beam during CMU's meet with Iowa. That mark is just .025 off Espinoza's career-high and matches her season-high.

Erica Gilkerson, Ball State

Gilkerson helped the Cardinals capture the floor event with her stunning routine scoring a 9.825 for a first place finish.  The team managed to beat Illinois State on floor 48.200 to 47.775.  Gilkerson also took second place honors on vault with a 9.775 performance.
