TOLEDO, OH - Sophomore women's soccer player Natalia Gaitàn and the Colombia National Team (2-1-1) recorded an impressive 2-0 victory over Sweden on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Germany. Two goals inside 11 first-half minutes did the trick for the South American side who was making their first appearance at this level.
Colombia, only the second team from their continent to progress beyond the group stage, will now face Nigeria on Thursday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. (local time) in Bielefeld. The match will also be shown live on ESPNU at 12:30 p.m. (ET). The other half of the 'Final Four' pits host Germany against the Korea Republic.
A captain and starting defender, Gaitàn has played a key role in helping her national team surrender one goal or less in three of their four World Cup matches, including back-to-back shutouts.
