MAC Announces Softball Academic All-MAC Team

Updated 6/8/2011
CLEVELAND -- The Mid-American Conference released its 2011 Academic All-MAC Softball team as voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives. A total of 23 student-athletes were honored this season due to ties. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.

Six student-athletes were honored for the second consecutive season. Those student-athletes were Alex Feltes and Alex Helfrich of Akron, Alicia Barkley of Ball State, Sarah Gerber of Eastern Michigan and Melissa Bonner and Emily Wethington of Ohio.

This year Kara Dornbos of Central Michigan, Shana Szypka of Toledo and Courtney Rousseau and Western Michigan were named to the team after posting a 4.00 cumulative GPA at their respective institutions.

Joining their teammates were Alyssa Collins of Ball State, Molly Coldren and Macy Merchant of Central Michigan, Jenna Ignowski, McKenna Russ and Stacie Skodinski of Eastern Michigan, Jillian Van Wagnen of Ohio, Lindsey Tobias of Toledo and Lexi Jager of Western Michigan.

Rounding out this year's team were Lindsay Arney, Paige Berger and Hannah Fulk of Bowling Green, Nan Harvey Award recipient Holly Finchum of Kent State and Pitcher of the Year Jessica Simpson of Miami.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
