CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Tom Barry was perfect for over four innings and gave up just four hits in 7.1 innings of work as Northern Illinois used a three-run third to stay alive in the 2011 MAC Baseball Tournament and eliminate the Bowling Green Falcons by a score of 4-2 on Thursday afternoon at VA Memorial Stadium. The Huskies improve to 30-26 while the Falcons end their season at 20-31.

The deciding runs were scored early for the Huskies as they pounded out four consecutive base hits with one away in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Joe Etcheverry's drive to right brought Jamison Wells and Cory Krupp around to score. After Bowling Green starter Charles Wooten sat Troy White down on strikes, MAC Freshman of the Year Jeff Zimmerman sent a squibber back up the middle to make it 3-0.

NIU's Barry didn't allow a baserunner through 4.1 innings until facing some difficulty with one out in the bottom of the fifth. A Clay Duncan liner past a diving White at third started the Bowling Green rally. Duncan was able to get a free pass to second after Barry balked and moved onto third base after Ryan Schlater cracked the Falcons' second hit of the day. Andrew Kubuski cut NIU's margin to 3-1 on a chopper to third base with the runners in motion. Without a play at the plate, the Huskies took the out at first leaving Schlater at second base with two outs. The next BG batter, T.J. Losby, singled him in with a liner to center before Barry escaped the jam.

Zimmerman came back in the top half of the sixth with his tenth home run of the year near the scoreboard in left field to make it 4-2, prompting a pitching change from Bowling Green. Falcons reliever Mike Frank gave up a bloop single to his first batter before retiring 12 of the final 13 he faced.

Facing NIU closer Kyle Glancy in the bottom of the ninth, Bowling Green strung together a base hit and a walk to put two on with no one out until a check swing from Duncan started a 4-6-3 double play to all but end the threat.

The Huskies will have a quick turnaround as they play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against the loser of this afternoon's Eastern Michigan/Kent State game in another elimination game.
