Sunday Tee Times
NASHPORT,Ohio - Starting on-time despite strong overnight storms, the 2011 MAC Women's Golf Championship concluded its second day with Kent State holding onto a narrow lead yet again, only with a new team hot on its heels. Fueled by a back-nine 32 from overall leader Sarah Johnson, Eastern Michigan carded the low team score on Saturday with a 301 to shave six shots off its deficit to the Golden Flashes and will enter Sunday's final round just five back. After recording the low round on Friday with a 72, Johnson's 73 was bested only by a 72 from Ohio's Meryl Weaver for the best individual score today at the Longaberger Golf Club.
The round didn't start well for Johnson who bogeyed both the first and second to bring her back to the pack. Three more bogeys on the front nine had her five over on her round and out of first place but pars on Nos. 10 and 11 steadied her and a barrage of birdies followed as the sophomore shot four under on the last seven holes to reclaim control of the overall lead. She will have a six-shot cushion over Kent State's Shamira Marshall and Western Michigan's Britney Hamilton and a seven-shot lead over teammate Darby Peters when she tees off tomorrow morning.
Following Johnson's example, the rest of the Eagles found their groove in Saturday's second round to wrest second place away from Ball State with Peters tying for the day's third-best round of 74, and Alyssa Kwon and Robyn Scott chipping in with a 76 and 78, respectively. While Kent State received four sub-80 rounds from Marshall, Sarah Bradley, Mandi Morrow and Martina Gavier, they still combined for a 307, marking the first time since the second round of the 2009 MAC Championship that the Golden Flashes have failed to fire the low team round at this event.
Having won every MAC women's golf championship since the event's inception in 1999, Kent State will go for its 13th overall team title tomorrow but will do so with the smallest final-round lead that they have ever had. Live results will once again be available through the Championship Central page. The day's first tee times are set for 7:40 a.m.
