MAC Wrestler of the Week
Steve Brown, Central Michigan - Senior, Hermon, N.Y. (Hermon-Dekalb Central High School)
Senior Steve Brown, ranked 13th nationally at 157 pounds, upset No. 1-ranked and defending national champion Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska, 3-2, in the second sudden victory period on Saturday. Burroughs had won 44 consecutive matches entering Saturday's dual. In his first match on Saturday, Brown pinned Neb.-Kearney's Jordan Gienger in the second period. Sixth-ranked CMU defeated Neb.-Kearney, the No. 3-ranked team in Division II, 37-3, and No. 12 Nebraska, 29-6.
Dustin Kilgore, Kent State - Sophomore, Berea, Ohio (Berea High School)
Sophomore Dustin Kilgore needed only two periods to record an 18-1 technical fall victory over Clarion's Clint Podish. Prior to Kilgore's match, KSU trailed Clarion 15-13, but Flashes never trailed again in a 21-15 road victory. Ranked second in the nation by W.I.N. and D1CW, Kilgore is 13-0 on the season with seven pins, two technical falls and one major decision. Podish entered the day with an 8-5 record. In last season's dual, Kilgore defeated Podish 5-3.
Nick Purdue, Ohio University - Sophomore, Genoa, Ohio (Genoa High School)
Sophomore Nick Purdue had a great competition day at the 2009 Reno Tournament of Champions, posting a 4-1 record en route to earning silver in the 184-pound division. Purdue keyed the Bobcats (6-0) to a co-fourth place finish in the nationally-renown tournament. The team, scoring 77 points, finished ahead of such nationally-ranked programs as No. 19 Cal Poly (finished sixth), No. 8 Boise State (finished eighth) and tied with No. 21 Arizona State. Purdue defeated three seeded wrestlers (two of which are nationally-ranked) on his path to the finals, losing a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Stanford's Zach Giesen, who is currently ranked No. 19 in the nation. Purdue beat Andrew Buck of Navy, Levi Holt of Boise State (15-1 major decision), Pat Bradshaw of Edinboro (No. 20 in the nation) and Wyoming's Joe Leblanc (No. 6 in the nation). Purdue is now 17-4 this season for Ohio.
David Wade, Eastern Michigan - Junior, Beavercreek, Ohio (Beavercreek High School)
Junior David Wade led the way for the Eagles last Sunday, Dec. 20, with a sixth place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Wade had a 3-3 record at the tournament, which included a trio of decisions including a 7-3 victory over Edinboro University's Chris Birchler, who was ranked No. 3 in the tournament. Wade is now 11-6 on the season.
