CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference released its 2007 Academic All-MAC Women’s Gymnastics team as voted on by the league’s faculty athletic representatives. A total of nine student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
Northern Illinois and Western Michigan led the league in number of honorees, with each school having two student-athletes named to the squad. Senior Jody Yednock and sophomore Jennifer Naughton represented the Huskies while Western Michigan’s Jennifer Sturgis, the 2007 MAC Gymnast of the Year, and Andrea Perini were also named to the team .
The 2006-07 Academic All-MAC squad includes two members from last year’s team: Senior Kelly Watson of Ball State and junior Jholeen Ponce of Bowling Green State. Jules Passy represented Central Michigan while Laci Hendress was the lone Kent State Golden Flash selected to this year’s team. Duyen Zu Voung, a member of Eastern Michigan’s 2007 MAC Championship team, also garnered Academic All-MAC honors.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
