MAC Gymnast of the Week

Andrea Perini

Western Michigan

Beam, vault, floor, bars

Perini helped the Broncos to a tight win over Northern Illinois, 192.775 to 192.500, recording WMU's best scores in three of the four competitions. Coming down to the last event for Sunday's win, Perini tied for first with teammate Jennifer Sturgis in the floor exercise on the fourth rotation, posting a 9.775. Perini also led the Broncos with a team-high finish of second place in the bars, tallying a career-best 9.775. She had a team-high finish of fifth (9.675) in the beam, and was the only Bronco to score over a 9.500 in the event. In addition, Perini placed eighth in the vault (9.575). Perini captured the all-around title, for just the second time in her career, totaling a 38.775.

Kelly Watson

Vault, bars, beam, floor

Watson was the lone all-around performer for Ball State at Eastern Michigan this past weekend.  Watson tallied a 9.700 on vault, a 9.475 on bars, 9.175 on beam while collecting a 9.600 on floor to end the day.  Watson ended the meet with an all-around total of 37.950.


Jholeen Ponce

Bowling Green

Bars, beam, vault

Ponce set a new career best of 9.850 and tied for fifth on the vault. On the bars scored a 9.600. Finally she ended the night on beam where she placed tied for ninth with a 9.750.


Laura Rogers

Central Michigan

Fr.● (Overland Park, Kan. /Saint Thomas Aquinas)

All around

Rogers captured the all-around title at the Eagle Invitational on Saturday, scoring 38.700 with two event scores above 9.700. She finished second on the balance beam with a score of 9.775 and earned a 9.725 on the uneven bars.


Kristin Peters

Kent State

Vault, bars, beam

Peters earned first place honors on vault with a huge effort that earned a 9.800.  She also took first place on bars with a nearly flawless performance that earned her a 9.900.


MAC Specialist of the Week

Jacque Bernhardt

Bowling Green

Jr. ● (Phoenix, AZ. /Hamilton)


Bernhardt only competed in one event Saturday night, the vault.

That was all the Falcons would need her to do as she vaulted to a near perfect 9.925, winning her the event. This is a new career best and places her in second all time vault scores in BGSU history. Bernhardt's previous career best came this year at 9.850.

Tarkington placed the highest out of all the Cardinals on vault at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.  The senior managed a 9.750 score on the day.


Danielle Espinoza

Central Michigan

Jr. ● (Rossford, Ohio/Rossford)

Beam, floor exercise

Espinoza finished second and tied for third on her two events at the Eagle Invitational last weekend as CMU placed second at the four-team meet. She scored 9.825 to take second place on the floor exercise, and her 9.750 on the balance team earned her a tie for third place on that event.


Tawna Bennett

Eastern Michigan

Bennett posted a 9.800, tying for medalist honors at the Fourth Annual Eagle Invitational, hosted by EMU. Bennett would help lead the Eagles to their second consecutive Eagle Invitational win posting a 193.675, defeating conference rivals Central Michigan and Ball State, and non-conference opponent Illinois State. Bennett’s medalist performance marks the second time in the past three meets she was won the vault event.      



Laci Hendress

Kent State

Beam, Floor

Hendress tallied a 9.700 on beam which earned her, her first-ever top three finish on that event.  She also earned first place honors on floor with a thrilling performance that earned her a mark of 9.850.


Jennifer Sturgis

Western Michigan

Sr. ● (Novi, Mich. /Novi)


Jennifer Sturgis helped the Broncos remain undefeated at home, and pick up a win over Northern Illinois with a first took first-place finish in the vault. Sturgis won the competition with a season-high score of 9.825. It was the second highest score totaled by a Bronco in the event this season. Sturgis also competed in the bars (9.725), beam (9.250) and floor (9.750).
