MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE NAMES THREE WRESTLING POST-SEASON AWARDS

Cleveland, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced today three wrestling post-season awards for the 2010 season as Central Michigan Coach Tom Borrelli was named Wrestling Coach of the Year, Kent State's Danny Mitcheff was awarded the Wrestler of the Year award and Central Michigan's Ben Bennett was named Freshman of the Year. All three awards were voted on by each of the conference's six head coaches.
Borrelli, in his 19th year as wrestling coach at Central Michigan, led the Chippewas to the 2010 regular season title and conference championship. Central Michigan placed ten wrestlers, one in each weight class, in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, as this marked the first time in MAC history where a member institution qualified all 10 individuals to the NCAA Championship. The Chippewas have won 11 of the last 12 MAC titles and 12 of the past 13 conference tournament championships, including nine consecutive. This honor marks the 11th time B orrelli has been named Coach of the Year.
Mitcheff, a native of Lorain, Ohio, closed his career at Kent State with 131 career victories, the most in program history. Mitcheff won the MAC tournament 133 weight class with an 8-2 decision over Central Michigan's Scotti Sentes, and was also named the MAC Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. Mitcheff qualified for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship and earned All-America honors as he finished sixth and became the second Kent State wrestler since 1986 to place in the top six at the NCAA Championships. On the year, Mitcheff went 34-6.
Bennett, a native of Rockford, Mich., earned All-America honors as he finished sixth at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship. Bennett won the MAC tournament 174 weight class with a 15-0 decision over Kent State's Keith Witt. Bennett finished his freshman year with a 26-8 overall record, and became only the fourth Central Michigan freshman to earn All-American honors.
