MAC Tournament - Game Two
WP - Thoreson (6-3)
LP - Rassi (3-7)
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Miami ace Mac Thoreson spread four Toledo hits and six strikeouts over nine innings and the RedHawks scored single runs in three consecutive innings to get past Toledo 3-1 in today's second matchup at VA Memorial Stadium, completed in just one hour and 38 minutes. Miami moves to 33-24 while Toledo drops to 26-28.
With both teams managing only one hit apiece through four innings, Toledo finally cracked the scoring column in the top half of the fifth inning when Mark Lapikas lashed a long double to right-center, then advanced to third when the next batter, Jim Vahalik, singled sharply to left field. Jeff Cola brought him in on a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Rockets a 1-0 edge.
Miami quickly countered in the bottom of the fifth as Kevin Bower reached on a four-pitch base on balls and then moved to second on a Ryan Curl sacrifice bunt. With one out in the inning, Ryan Kaup scorched a sinking liner down the third base line which was snagged nicely by Toledo's Joe Corfman, however his throw to first sailed high, allowing Kaup to advance to second and Bower to score on the play.
The RedHawks grabbed the lead an inning later in the sixth. Brad Gschwind lined a double down the third-base line to get the rally started. Adam Weisenburger followed with a deep fly to right field to sacrifice Gschwind to third, then Kyle Weldon knocked in the go-ahead run with a slow roller to first base that didn't allow for a play at the plate.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Bower cranked a delivery from Rassi high over the left-centerfield wall to give Miami all the offense they would need, going up 3-1 on his second home run of the season.
Thoreson was challenged in the top of the 8th when the Rockets put men on first and second, however he induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to stem the tide and retired Toledo in order in the 9th.
Miami moves into the winner's bracket and plays the winner of No. 2 Central Michigan and No. 7 Western Michigan tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. while Toledo preps for the CMU/WMU loser with a first pitch of 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.
