TOLEDO, OH - Toledo overcame a 12-point halftime deficit and pulled off a thrilling 71-68 overtime victory over Syracuse on Sunday in the ‘Elite Eight' of the WNIT. Today's fourth-round postseason contest was played before a season-high 5,001 fans in Savage Arena, 10th-largest crowd in school history. With the extra-period triumph, the Rockets improve to 27-8 overall, equalling the single-season UT record for wins.
The 2010-11 Mid-American Conference regular-season champions will now host Atlantic 10 member Charlotte in the ‘Final Four' on Wednesday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m.
Junior Naama Shafir paced the Rockets in today's overtime victory with 22 points, a career-high nine rebounds and four assists in a collegiate-best 42 minutes. The 2010-11 first-team All-MAC performer shot 6-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, and 7-9 from the charity stripe to tally at least 20 points for a squad-best eighth time this season.
Joining Shafir in double figures was sophomore Yolanda Richardson with 13 points and four caroms. Richardson has now scored at least 10 points in five of the last nine games and is contributing 13.0 points, a team-high 6.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per contest in the WNIT.
Toledo also benefitted from outstanding performances by junior Haylie Linn (9 pts., 6 rbs., 5 ast.), freshshirt freshman Andola Dortch (9 pts.), senior Jessica Williams (8 pts.) and senior Melissa Goodall (7 pts.) against the Orange to extend its home win streak to 16-consecutive games.
