WMU's Oliver Named COBRA Magazine National Defensive Player of the Year

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan freshman libero Lena Oliver was named Defensive Player of the Year by COBRA Magazine and was also named to the All-National Second Team.

According to its website, COBRA Magazine is the first national publication that primarily showcases the talents of African descent. Their goal is to tell inspiring stories of black volleyball playesr to show that young African American players they too have opportunities to thrive in the sport despite cultural differences and economic disadvantages.

Oliver, a Battle Creek Native and member of the MAC All-Freshman Team, was eighth nationally in digs per set with 5.61 and helped the Broncos to the top-ranked defense in the MAC. Oliver, who was also named to COBRA's Midwest All-Region team along with Jessica Brown and Ashley Turnage. Brown was named Honorable Mention All-National Team.

Oliver helped WMU to its fifth straight 20-win team as the Broncos finished the season 22-10.
