MAC Women’s Golfers Of The Week

Catherine Fortin, Eastern Michigan, Jr., Beauceville, Canada (Polyvalente St. Francois)

Fortin fired a second round 77 to finish one-shot off the pace with a 152 (75-77), as Tennessee Tech’s Madison Denman earned medalist honors with a 151. For the second consecutive tournament the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team is walking away with the invitational trophy as the Green and White recorded a 646 (324-322) to win the weather-shortened EKU Spring Invitational at the Arlington Golf Course. The event was scheduled to conclude Saturday, but it was cancelled due to inclement weather forecasted for tomorrow. The tournament victory marks the third championship that EMU has captured during the 2006-07 campaign and the eighth overall title in the program’s 10-year history. The victory is also Eastern’s fourth during head coach Sandy Wagner’s two year tenure as coach.

Other Nominees:

Meredith Waterston, Ohio, Sr., Bloomington, Minn. (Academy of Holy Angels)

Waterston took home a 10th place finish at the EKU Spring Invitational last week.  Battling strong winds and near-freezing temperatures, Waterston posted a team-best 162 in the tournament, which saw the final round cancelled.  Her 79 in the second round helped Ohio post the second-lowest single-round team score in the 12-team tournament.

Laura Bavaird, Western Michigan, Jr., Grosse Ile, Mich. (Grosse Ile)

Bavaird led the way for Western Michigan at the Indiana Invitational, finishing in a six-way tie for 16th place. She answered her first-round score of 80 with a 1-over-par 73. Bavaird had to grind through her round after recording a triple bogey on her opening hole. She bounced back with a birdie on her very next hole and added another later in the round. Western Michigan, which finished tied for seventh, improved on its day one team score by nine strokes, shooting an aggregate score of 304 to finish in a tie for seventh place with Texas. The Broncos finished six strokes better than #48 Indiana and 26 strokes better than #31 UNLV. It was the team's third-straight top-10 finish after finishing in a tie for sixth at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, hosted by WMU, and claiming the William & Mary Invitational on March 24-25.
