MAC Women’s Golfer Of The Week

Kim Kester, Toledo, Sr., Ada, Mich. (Forest Hills Northern)

Kester led the Rockets in to a third-place finish in the Rio Verde Invitational by tying for third place with a four-over par 220 (71-73-76). The Rockets finished six strokes behind first-place Baylor and three strokes behind Arkansas-Little Rock. Kester helped the Rockets set a school record with a team score of 289 in the second round. The Rockets will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 26-27 with a trip to Hot Springs, AR for the UALR/North Texas Classic.


Other Nominees:

Jessica McCann, Bowling Green, Jr., Mason, Ohio (Mason)

McCann was the top Falcon finisher, carding back-to-back 76's, combined with an 81 on day one to finish tied for 49th with a 233. She also finished 20th in the tournament with six birdies.


Catherine Fortin, Eastern Michigan, Jr., Beauceville, Canada (Polyvalente St. Francois)

Fortin continued her strong play with a fourth consecutive top-10 showing, turning in a tie for third place at the Rio Verde Invitational here at the Quail Run Golf Course, March 9-11. Competing against some of the region's best golfers, the Beauceville, Canada native carded a 73 in the final round to finish with a 220. As a team, the Eagles placed ninth with a team score of 915 (303-308-304) as Baylor University took home the invitational hardware with an 886 (289-300-297). The Bears made it a double victory as Allison Martin captured medalist honors with a four-under 212 (69-72-71).


Kira Mexiner, Kent State, Jr.,  Richmond, B.C. (Hugh Boyd Secondary)

Meixner tied for eighth individually at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational, helping the Golden Flashes to a ninth place team finish.  Meixner carded rounds of 78-70-73=221 (+11) for the event to record her ninth career top-10 finish.  Her second round 70 was her low round for the 2006-07 season and her 15th career round of par or better.


Kristen Mautz, Ohio, Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio (Upper Arlington)

Mautz tied for 43rd among 107 competitors in the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational.  The Bobcat senior led five Ohio golfer with a three-round total of 232 which included single round scores of 78, 77 and 77.


Abbie Many, Northern Illinois, Jr., Mount Prospect, Ill. (Prospect)

Many was one of NIU’s most consistent performers for the Huskies in two events, as she averaged a 78.6 in five rounds of action. Her most impressive performance was a two-round, seventh-place finish of 148 (75-73) at the 9th Annual Springlake Invitational. That 73 was also a career-best for Many.  


Erin Thorne, Western Michigan, Sr., Bracebridge, Ont. (Bracebridge & Muskoka Lakes Secondary)

Thorne earned team medalist honors this past weekend at the Fifth Annual Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, finishing eighth out of 107 golfers.  She fired a final-round 1-under-par, 71 at Rio Verde CC.  Thorne birdied five holes on Sunday, including three of her last six.  This is the third top-10 finish for Thorne this season and first of the spring.
