MAC Men’s Golf: Golfer of the Week
Sr. ? New Philadelphia, Ohio (New Philadelphia HS)
Blake Sattler took medalist honors and Brad Wright (Cambridge, Ohio/Cambridge HS) finished in second to lead the University of Akron men’s golf team to a first-place finish at the McLaughlin Tournament this weekend. The win marked only the second tournament victory for the Zips since 1997. Akron last took top honors on April 1, 2006 at the Bradford Intercollegiate, but had not won a event prior to that since finishing first at the Persimmon Ridger Intercollegiate on Oct. 21, 1997. Sattler won the event after finishing six under par on the weekend with 204 (65-71-68) strokes. The win was Sattler's third victory at Akron and first of the season. Sattler, who sat out all of last season as a medical redshirt, put the Zips in great position after round one as he shot a tournament-low 65 in round one.
The Zips carded in 835 (273-286-276) strokes, earning first-year head coach Tom Porten his first tournament victory at Akron.
Akron held off host school St. Johns by two strokes for the win.
Sr. ? Dieppe, New Brunswick (Mathieu-Martin HS)
Bourgeois finished second individually at the Mattaponi Springs Shootout Sept. 25-26, firing three sub-par pounds to finish at 11-under for the tournament. He followed his opening round 68 with a second-round 67, his best 18-hole performance since the 2004 MAC Championship. A 2006 MAC Championship co-medalist, Bourgeois three-round total of 205 (68-67-70) bested his previous career low 54-hole total by 10 strokes. He finished the tournament with 15 birdies and 35 pars and had the third-lowest par-4 scoring average for the tournament (3.87, -4). As a team, Kent State finished sixth in the 15-team field.
