CLEVELAND, OH - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team returned to the win column on Monday as the Bulls downed Cleveland State, 2-0, in a non-conference match. The win improved the Bulls to 5-6-1 while the Vikings slipped to 6-7-0.
UB jumped out with a quick goal in the opening moments. Senior Juha Kaartoluoma scored the opening goal nine minutes into the match as he took a pass from Anthony Johnson and deposited the ball past CSU goalkeeper Almir Suljevic for his third goal of the season. Mike Unwin also earned an assist on the goal.
The Bulls added an insurance goal as time was expiring in the match. Unwin scored his third goal of the season on a breakaway with just 1:46 left to play, giving the Bulls the 2-0 advantage.
That was all the offense that freshman Ryan Aubrey needed as he got his first action in goal since September 12. Aubrey pitched his second shutout in three starts, needing just one save in the 86th
minute to secure the win.
Both teams had eight shots in the match. The Bulls collected five shots on goal to CSU's one.
The Bulls return to Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, October 16 as they travel to top-ranked Akron for a 7:30 pm showdown.
