MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan (3-7, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) defeated Ohio (6-6, 2-1 MAC) by a score of 2-1 (4-3 on penalty strokes) on Saturday at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Chippewas picked up their first MAC win of the season in a game that lasted tow hours and 13 minutes as the game went into two overtimes and then into penalty strokes.
Ohio scored the first goal of the game just over two minutes into the first half when sophomore Taylor Brown scored on a penalty corner with an assists senior Paige Herr and junior Jenna Green.
The score was still 1-0 coming out of halftime. CMU tied the game two minutes into the second half when freshman forward Bailey McKeon scored on a penalty corner. Junior back Brooke Sihota had an assist on the play.
The play went back and forth throughout the rest of regulation and overtime, with both teams getting opportunities to score a game winning goal. The Chippewas had a game winning goal late in the second overtime called off because the ball hit a player's foot.
In the shootout, both teams scored their first three penalty strokes. After Ohio missed their fourth shot, freshman Simone Lazar made a penalty stroke to put CMU ahead for good in the shootout. Ohio's last stroke went wide.
CMU held the edge in shots on goal, 12-11, and in penalty corners, 10-9.
Junior Anastasia Netto started in goal for the Chippewas. She made 10 saves and picked up her third win of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Erin Dye led the CMU offensive attack with seven shots and five shots on goal. Both Brooke Sihota and her sister, senior back Kim Sihota, had two shots as well.
The Chippewas are back in action on Saturday, October 9 at 1 p.m. They play the Ball State Cardinals (3-6, 0-3 MAC) at 1 p.m. at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.Ball State 2, Missouri State 1 (OT)
MUNCIE, Ind. - Junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) scored two goals as the Ball State field hockey team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Missouri State, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.
At 8:51 mark, Kuhn put the Cardinals' on the board with an unassisted goal just in front of the Bears' netminder Steph Anderson, her ninth goal of the season. Missouri State's Casey Bayliss tallied the equalizer at 49:52 mark after tapping it in off of a deflection. Senior midfielder Jennifer Portell provided the assist.
Kuhn netted the Cardinals' game-winning goal at 78:51 in overtime, an unassisted shot after Anderson dove for the ball. The communication studies major tallied six shots on the day, while senior forward Maura Sawicki (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) finished with two shots during the contest and a defensive save, her first of the season. Junior midfielder Caitlin Maguire tallied three shots, while junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu) and junior forward Kristen Falk tallied one each.
Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) and junior netminder Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) split time in the cage. The duo combined for a total of eight saves, while Missouri State's Anderson recorded five saves in the cage.
Ball State travels to play Central Michigan Saturday, Oct. 9 in Mount Pleasant, Mich. at 1 p.m., before returning to the BSU Turf Field Sunday, Oct. 10 to host UC Davis in a contest scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday's game marks the 62nd time Ball State and Central Michigan have met. The Cardinals own a 39-22 all-time record against the Chippewas. The contest versus UC Davis Sunday marks the first meeting between the two teams.
