MAC Wrestler of the Week

Ben Bennett, Central Michigan-Sophomore, Rockford, Mich. (Rockford High School)

Central Michigan sophomore Ben Bennett won all four of his matches last week as the Chippewas went 2-2 in four duals, including a 21-13 win at Northern Illinois in the MAC opener. Bennett, ranked fifth nationally at 174 pounds, improved to 19-4 overall including 8-1 in duals. He has won nine of his last 10 bouts and has not allowed an offensive point in his nine victories.

Additional Nominees:

Andrew Schutt, Buffalo-Sophomore, Greenwood Township, Mich. (Yale High School)

Buffalo sophomore Andrew Schutt turned in a solid performance at the Virginia Duals, going 3-1 with his only loss coming against number-one ranked Kellen Russell of Michigan. Schutt opened the tournament with a pin of Virginia's #31 ranked Gus Sako, the fastest pin registered at the tournament. Following his close loss to Russell, Schutt earned wins over Aaron Nestor of Rider (9-6) and Chase Smith of Wyoming (8-5).

David Wade, Eastern Michigan-Senior, Beavercreek, Ohio (Beavercreek High School)

Eastern Michigan senior heavyweight David Wade appears to be hitting his stride as he won two bouts at the Spartan Duals last weekend, including a 2-0 victory over 16th-ranked Mike McClure of Michigan State. Wade pinned Harry Turner of Lock Haven in 4:08 earlier in the day to push Eastern Michigan to a 34-6 victory, but his win over McClure couldn't make up for the insurmountable deficit against Michigan State as the Eagles fell 19-15. Wade is looking to gain momentum and repeat as an NCAA Qualifier for the second year in a row.

Brendan Barlow, Kent State-Junior, Westerville, Ohio (Westerville Central High School)

Kent State  junior Brendan Barlow helped the Golden Flashes place third at the Virginia Duals last weekend. Barlow went 3-1 with a 10-5 upset win over Penn State's Cameron Wade, who is ranked No. 5 according to Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN).  In Kent State's 31-7 win against No. 25 Arizona State, Barlow scored a 12-4 major decision over Levi Cooper, who is ranked No. 24 by Division1CollegeWrestling.  Barlow sealed Kent State's 26-16 victory over Rider by pinning Evan Craig in the first period.  His only setback of the weekend was a 5-3 decision against No. 1 Zach Rey of Lehigh.
