MAC Announces Track and Field Athletes of the Week

Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Rachel Patterson, Miami, So., Rochester, Mich./Adams
Patterson won the 3,000 meters Saturday, her only event of the meet, in a personal-best time of 10:04.02. The race was held on a 200 meter track and when converted, her time of 10:03.22 makes her the eighth-fastest performer in Miami history in the event. She won the race by over five seconds among the field of 15 and gave Miami a 1-2-3 finish in the event.

Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Renaldo Powell, Central Michigan, Fr., Wayne, Mich./Wayne Memorial
Won the 60m hurdles at the season-opening Saginaw Valley Holiday Classic ... qualifying with a time of 8.40 in the prelims before crossing the line in 8.30 in the finals to win the event in his first collegiate meet ... finished .34 ahead of the runner-up.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week
Ashley Zaper, Miami, Fr., Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne
In her first collegiate meet, freshman Ashley Zaper won the high jump at the season-opening Oiler Opener with a leap of 5-8 (1.73m), finishing ahead of 29 other competitors, including some from MAC foe Toledo. Her height of 5-8 ties her as the third-best performer in the event in Miami history. Zaper also qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash, in which she placed seventh in 7.84 seconds, which ranks 10th on Miami's all-time performers list in the event.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week
John Calvert, Central Michigan, Jr., Saginaw, Mich./Ferris State
Tossed a personal best 53-0 3/4 in the shot put at CMU's season opener ... winning the event by 1-4 ¼.

 


 

Additional Women's Track Nominees
Jordan Dunn, Central Michigan, Jr., Lansing, Mich./Lansing Waverly
Took first in the 60m in CMU's season opener ... qualified for the finals with a time of 7.66 while winning the final heat after crossing the line in 7.77.

Additional Women's Field Nominees
Erika Schroll, Central Michigan, Sr., Union, Mich./Three Rivers
Set a personal best with a leap of 5-10 in the high jump portion of the pentathlon ... the height is a provisional qualifier ... also won the pentathlon with 3,525 points.

Alex Afloari, Toledo, Jr., Romania
In her first meet with the Rockets, Afloari jumped into the school's top-10 performance list with her mark of 38-07.00 in the triple jump. She took first in that event at the Findlay Oiler Opener, while also finishing eighth in the long jump and qualifying for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles.
