WESTERVILLE, Ohio-- Eastern Michigan University claimed its first ever Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship with a 72-hole total of 1138 (285-290-274-289) Saurday afternoon here at the at the Medallion Club. The Eagles dominated the final round, carding a 289 (+1), as the University of Akron finished as the runner-up with a three-day total of 1141 (282-281-281-297).
The Eagles' Graham Hill led all individuals through rounds three and four to claim medalist honors with an eleven-under par total of 277(70-71-67-69). Hill was followed by Akron's Brad Wright (69-69-71-72=281) and Kent State's Peter Ahn (70-70-68-72=284).
Weather created havoc the final round as players battled periods of light to heavy rain throughout the day. Eastern Michigan shot 15-under par through the first 54 holes and followed that up by turning in an one-over par performance in the final round. Kent State (1147) placed third and Ball State finished fourth (1160), while Ohio (1166), Bowling Green (1173), Miami (1177), Toledo (1185) and Northern Illinois (1192) rounded out the team scores.
Following the championship the All-MAC and specialty awards were announced. EMU’s head coach Bruce Cunningham was selected the MAC Coach of the Year while Hill was tabbed the MAC Golfer of the Year, and was named to the all-tournament team and first team All-MAC. EMU sophomore Chris Ross garnered second team All-MAC accolades.
