MAC Women’s Golfer Of The Week

Tammy Clelland, Toledo, Jr., Taupo, New Zealand (Waikato Institute of Technology)

Clelland helped the Toledo women's golf team register its best finish of the 2006 fall season by finishing in a third-place tie on Tuesday at The Shootout at the Legends. The Rockets shot a three-round score of 894 at the par-72, 6,122-yard Legends Golf Course, two strokes shy of the school record set by last year's squad. Campbell (877) captured the team title by 13 strokes over second-place Illinois (890). Wisconsin finished tied for third place with the Rockets.

Clelland (75-67-74) tied for second place with EMU's Catherine Fortin (75-73-68) with an even-par 216 and finished one stroke behind Campbell's Mary Mattson (70-72-73--215). Clelland's 54-hole total was two strokes away from her school-record total of 214 set last season.

Other Nominees:

Jessica McCann, Bowling Green, Jr., Mason, Ohio (Mason)

McCann continued her stellar play in the fall season with a fourth-place finish at the EKU Colonel Classic this week. The junior improved on each of her three rounds, carding 82-80-78, finishing just eight strokes behind medalist. In four tournaments this fall McCann has finished first, fourth and sixth.

Catherine  Fortin, Eastern Michigan, Jr. Beauceville, Canada (Polyvalente St. Francois)

Fortin led the way for the Eagles at the Shootout at the Legends, firing an even-par 216 (75-73-68) to finish tied for second place. The runner-up showing was Fortin’s best finish of the fall and marked her fifth career top five finish and 16th career top 20 showing. The Beauceville, Canada native tied with Mid-American Conference rival Tammy Clelland from the University of Toledo for the conference’s top finish in the event. Fortin’s third-round 68 is the lowest of any EMU golfer this season and is one stroke shy of her career-low 67 set last year at the Rocket Fall Classic, Sept. 10, 2005, at Heather Downs Country Club in Toledo, Ohio. As a team, the Eagles finished fifth with a school-record score of 895 (301-302-292).

Shanna Siefke, Ohio, Sr., Toledo, Ohio (St. Ursula Academy)

Siefke paced the Bobcat women at 17-team Shootout at The Legends this week. The senior turned in the top Ohio card with a 76 on Tuesday, the second-lowest round for an Ohio golfer this fall, and finished the 54-hole tournament with a team-best 232 composite (78-78-76).

Laura Bavaird, Western Michigan, Jr., Grosse Ile, Mich. (Grosse Ile)

Bavaird finished her fall campaign with her strongest outing, statistically.  Bavaird opened the Shoot-Out at the Legends, an event that featured five teams from the Mid-American Conference, with a 71.  The opening score of 1-under-par is a career low for 18 holes.  She followed with a 3-over-par 75 to end day one with her career low for 36 holes (146).  Bavaird led the Broncos with a tie for 13th and finished the event with another career low, this time for 54 holes (224).
