ATHENS, Ohio - Cathryn Rogers converted on a penalty kick early in the 82nd minute, and the Bobcat defense took care of the rest as Ohio soccer downed Marshall 1-0 Wednesday at Chessa Field.
Rogers' score was her first of the season, while freshman Mattie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio) recorded her second shutout of the year for the 'Cats, who improved to 2-2-0 overall. The Thundering Herd, meanwhile, fell to 2-2-2 for the season.
Defense certainly took center stage in the hard-fought struggle. The Herd held a slight 10-9 advantage on shots, while Ohio landed six of their shots on goal compared to Marshall's four. Rogers and Sara Seitz (Englewood, Ohio) each tallied a pair of shots to pace Ohio. Liston added four saves and teamed with the Green and White back line of Sarah Brown (North Royalton, Ohio), Lauren Burke (Medina, Ohio), Paige Howard (Mentor, Ohio) and Kim Nordtveit (Newtown, Pa.) to secure the shutout.
"Our possession was fairly good in spurts, and we were organized defensively," Ohio coach Stacy Strauss said. "We did a good job taking away their threatening players, which is what we wanted. Marshall is a good team, and they put a lot of pressure on the ball. That forced us to play quicker."
The action was slow in the early going as the defenses limited the amount of serious looks at the net. Ohio's Natalie Bechtel (Westlake, Ohio) had a chance to put the 'Cats on the board first in the 37th minute as she made a quick turn on the ball to get behind the Herd defense. Marshall's keeper made a diving save on her shot from the right corner to keep things quiet. Ohio's defense did their part to keep Marshall quiet in the opening frame as well, holding the Herd without a shot on goal through the first 45 minutes of play.
Play certainly picked up early in the second stanza. Marshall picked up three corner-kick chances in a minute span, but the Green and White defense was up to the task and kept Marshall away from goal. The Herd's Megan Tabler nearly put Marshall on top late in the 61st minute with a shot that ricocheted off the cross bar before being cleared away by Ohio.
Action remained tight until the 82nd minute when Dieter made a good play on a ball to get the angle on the Herd's defense. She then sent a pass into the box, which was parlayed over to Rogers. Rogers fired a quick shot that hit off the hands of a Marshall defender to result in the automatic penalty try. The sophomore then nestled her shot into the top middle of the net to give Ohio the 1-0 advantage.
"In that situation, you want a player to step up and say 'I'm going to take the shot,'" Strauss said of the play. "Cat (Rogers) did, and she did a good job with it."
Marshall would not go down quietly, however. The Herd kept pushing on and had a pair of chances late in 88th minute to tie the action. Both attempts hit off the crossbar before being cleared out by the 'Cats defense as Ohio was able to escape with the win.
The 'Cats will now have a quick turnaround as they hit the road to battle Cleveland State Friday night in the first of five consecutive road games. A recap of the action with the Vikings and live stats can be found at OhioBobcats.com.
