MAC Wrestler of the Week
Jarod Trice, Central Michigan-Junior, Highland Park, Mich. (Highland Park High School)
Central Michigan junior Jarod Trice finished runner-up at heavyweight at the 2010 Midlands Championships after entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed. He won five straight matches before falling to the No. 1 seed, Lehigh's Zach Rey, in the finals. Along the way, Trice defeated the No. 3 seed, D.J. Russo (Rutgers), in the quarterfinals by a 9-3 decision and the No. 2 seed, Ryan Tomei (Pittsburgh), in the semifinals by a 2-1 decision. Trice advanced to the Midlands finals for a second consecutive season; he won the heavyweight title in 2009. Trice is now 13-3 on the season, with two of the losses coming to Rey, the nation's top-ranked heavyweight, by identical 2-1 scores.
Mark Lewandowski, Buffalo-Sophomore, Depew, N.Y. (Lancaster High School)
Buffalo sophomore Mark Lewandowski recorded a major decision over a returning national qualifier to help spark Buffalo to a 24-12 win over Binghamton on Sunday. With the match going back and forth, Lewandowski set the tone with an 11-2 win over Matt Kaylor in the 157 pound match. With the win, Lewandowski now has four wins in dual meets, the most on the team and he has a 20-10 record so far in what has become his breakout year.
Joe Tymoszczuk, Kent State-Senior, Solon, Ohio (Lake Catholic High School)
After starting the season at 197 pounds, Kent State senior Joe Tymoszczuk moved up to heavyweight for the Southern Scuffle and placed sixth in a bracket that included 11 Top 20 wrestlers. Tymoszczuk won six matches over two days and recorded three pins. On day two Tymoszczuk topped 11th seeded Ben Berhow of Minnesota 4-3 and seventh seeded Jeremy Johnson of Ohio 3-1 in overtime. His three pins all came on the opening day, coming against UNC-Greensboro's James Payne, Army's Christian Botero and NC State's Robery Isola.
Bryan Deutsch, Northern Illinois-Senior, Columbia City, Ind. (Columbia City High School)
Northern Illinois senior Bryan Deutsch took seventh place at 157 at the prestigious 48th annual Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern. Deutsch, the fifth seed, won four of his six matches and scored two victories via pin. Both his pins came on the second day of the tournament, including 2:26 pin fall win over Donnie Tasser in the seventh place match. His other pin of the day came over Eastern Michigan's Aaron Sulzer in 2:52. Deutsch is ranked as high as No. 17 by InterMatwrestle.com.
Nick Purdue, Ohio-Junior, Genoa, Ohio (Genoa High School)
Ohio junior Nick Purdue placed sixth at the Southern Scuffle, racking up a 4-2 record in the process, and helping to power the Bobcats to a 14th-place finish with 45.5 points. He followed with a 7-2 triumph over Chattanooga's Brandon Wright in Monday's 20-18 home loss to the Mocs.
