ANN ARBOR, Mich. -Senior Laurie Wilkins (Toledo, Ohio / Ottawa Hills) scored off a deflection in the 58th minute to give Kent State a 1-0 win at host Michigan today. The Golden Flashes have now won eight of their last 10 games and improved to 10-6 on the year. Michigan fell to 7-10 with the loss
After a scoreless first half in which each team attempted four shots, the Golden Flashes picked up the pressure in the second half. After halftime, Kent State attempted 10 shots compared to only two for Michigan, but it was a penalty corner opportunity that set up the game winning score. In the 58th minute KSU set up for one of its seven penalty corners, but junior Rachel Miller's (Bathurst, Australia / MacKillop College) first shot attempt was blocked. Wilkins then scored off a deflection posting her second career game winning goal in the process. The last seven goals by Kent State have come out of a penalty corner situation.
Both second half shots by Michigan came off the stick of Meredith Way in the final two minutes. Way's first shot at 68:18 sailed wide and Kent State goalie Caroline Suitch (Mountain Top, Pa. / Crestwood) saved the second to help preserve her first shutout of the season. Suitch totaled four saves in the game.
At 7-3 on the road this season, Kent State equals the second most single season road victories in program history and the most since the 200 squad also posted a 7-3 mark. Only five other times in the school annuals has a team won at least seven road games. The 1978 squad holds the all-time mark with an 8-0 record.
The Golden Flashes look to remain in first place in the Mid-American Conference and improve a 6-1 league record when they return home for their final three regular season games of the season. The home stand starts on Saturday against Central Michigan at 1:00 pm.
