Toledo?s Harmon Named MAC Female Scholar Athlete

CLEVELAND, OH? Toledo’s Shari Harmon (track & field) was named the MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week on May 14, 2009.

Harmon (So, 3.959, undecided, Temperance, Mich.) qualified for the NCAA Regionals by posting school-record height of 12-7.50 (3.85 meters) in the pole vault at the University of Michigan’s Len Paddock Invitational.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition.  The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.


Other Female Nominees:

Bowling Green: Barbara Powers (track & field, distance, So., 4.00, exercise science, Bowling Green, Ohio) finished ninth in the 1500 meters at the Len Paddock Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan. She had a time of 4:43.30 in that event, placing ninth of 22 runners.

Buffalo: Tiffany Maskulinski (track & field, pole vault, Jr., 3.60, exercise science, Elma, N.Y.) finished second in the women’s pole vault at the Campbell/Wright Open, the final tuneup for the upcoming MAC Championships. Maskulinski cleared 12-7.50 (3.85 meteres) to meet the regional qualifying standard. Maskulinski moved into a second-place tie in the MAC with her vault on Saturday.

Central Michigan: Tanisha Johnson (track and field, Jr., 3.15, sport studies, Macomb, Mich.) won the high jump in a jump-off at the Len Paddock Invitational. Johnson's winning height was 5-5 1/4. She finished first in a field of 11 competitors.

Eastern Michigan: Jessica Novakowski (track and field, Jr., 3.29, criminal justice, Wixom, Mich.) cleared a personal-best height of 12-07.50 in the pole vault at the Len Paddock Invitational, May 8-9, at the University of Michigan. Her mark not only was a career-best in the event, but ranks second in the conference, is an NCAA Regional qualifying mark and is the fourth highest attempt in school history.
