MAC Wrestler of the Week

Aaron Sulzer, Eastern Michigan-Sophomore, Cleveland, Ohio (Holy Name High School)

Eastern Michigan sophomore Aaron Sulzer continues to shine as the Cleveland native enjoyed somewhat of a homecoming by taking home two wins in leading Eastern Michigan to three dual match victories by a combined score of 125-9 at the 22nd Annual Wendy's Duals held in nearby Ashland, Ohio last Saturday.

Sulzer scored two pins and pushed his overall team lead to 13 wins on the season. Both pins amounted to a remarkable combined time of 2:07. His first victory over Campbell University occurred in just 1:24 and he bested it in his next bout with a stunning 43-second pin against Gardner-Webb University. The Eagles triumphed over Campbell by a score of 53-0 before dispatching Gardner-Webb, 43-3. Sulzer holds the mark for the third-fastest pin on the squad this season while outscoring his opponents, 29-13, in dual meets as well.

Additional Nominees:

Sean Walton, Buffalo-Freshman, Palmyra, N.Y. (Palmyra-Macedon High School)

Buffalo freshman Sean Walton pinned Edinboro's Bijan Banks just over a minute in to their 125-pound match last weekend. The pin put Buffalo up 6-0 early and was Walton's third pin in the past four dual meets. Those bonus points proved to be the difference after a late push from the Fighting Scots made it 18-16.

Mike Miller, Central Michigan-Senior, Uniontown, Ohio (Uniontown Lake High School)

Central Michigan senior Mike Miller returned to the Chippewas' lineup for the first time since suffering an injury at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 3 and rallied for a 9-7 sudden-victory decision over Michigan's Dan Yates on Sunday. Miller trailed 6-2 in the second period and was still trailing 7-5 before scoring a late takedown to send the match to overtime. Miller's third takedown of the match, on the edge of the mat 30 seconds into the sudden-victory period, provided the final 9-7 margin.

Matt Cathell, Kent State-Senior, Dover, Del. (Caesar Rodney High School)

Kent State senior Matt Cathell helped the Golden Flashes go 2-0 at the Wendy's Duals Saturday with wins against opponents from Purdue and Campbell.  In a split of 10 matches with the Boilermakers, Cathell's 11-0 major decision over Sam Patacsill helped make the difference in Kent State's 17-15 victory.  Cathell also recorded his sixth pin of the year against Campbell.  He stuck Jake Fose just one minute and nine seconds into the first period.

Bryan Deutsch, Northern Illinois-Senior, Columbia City, Ind. (Columbia City High School)

Northern Illinois senior Bryan Deutsch improved his overall record to 16-6 when he scored a major decision victory over Ohio's Casey Gordon Friday night in Northern Illinois 30-11 setback to the Bobcats. The victory was Deutsch's fifth straight and he has now won six or his last seven matches. It was also his second major decision victory in as many conference matches.  Deutsch is ranked as high as No. 14 by InterMatwrestle.com.

Erik Schuth, Ohio-Senior, Spencerport, N.Y. (Brockport High School)

Ohio senior Erik Schuth pinned Northern Illinois' Mike Lukowski in just one minute, 42 seconds to help lead the Ohio wrestling team to a 30-11 defeat of the Huskies in DeKalb, Ill. Schuth dominated that match up to that point, recording a takedown and a three-point near fall prior to the pin, while holding Lukowski off the scoreboard. The Bobcats improved to 4-3 overall.
