The Western Michigan women’s tennis team will look to defend its MAC Tournament title this weekend as the league’s championship is hosted by the University of Toledo beginning Thursday. WMU earned the No. 1 seed with a perfect 7-0 conference slate and 19-6 overall record.
Buffalo gained the No. 2 seed with its 7-1 MAC record and host Toledo is seeded third via its 6-2 conference record.
A three-way tie (with each team at 4-4) for the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 seed led to a draw, which resulted in Bowling Green goinjg in at No. 4, Miami at No. 5 and Eastern Michigan at No. 6.
Ball State is the No. 7 seed, Northern Illinois No. 8 and Akron No. 9.
Action gets underway Thursday with Northern Illinois and Akron squaring off in a first round contest. The winner of the UA vs. NIU encounter will face the No. 1 Broncos Friday in a quarterfinal match. Also playing on Friday will be Bowling Green vs. Miami, Toledo vs. Eastern Michigan and Buffalo vs. Ball State.
The winners advance to Saturday’s semifinal action and the league championship match is Sunday at 1 p.m.
Most matches will take place at the UT Varsity Courts, with the exception of two quarterfinal matches at Ottawa Park. In bad weather, the matches will be played indoors at Laurel Hill Tennis Club.
