MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The 2010 Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament champion Central Michigan women's soccer program will play No. 12 Marquette in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, the NCAA announced Monday.
Players, coaches and staff gathered at O'Kelly's Bar and Grill in Mount Pleasant for the announcement.
"Marquette is an extraordinarily good team," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "They are predominantly one of the top two teams in the Big East each year."
The Chippewas (16-4-1) and the Golden Eagles (15-4-2) will square off in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday with the winner advancing to the second round in Milwaukee on Sunday.
This is the second-consecutive season that the Maroon and Gold have advanced to the NCAA tournament. Last season, the Chippewas defeated then No. 24 Purdue, 2-0, in South Bend, Ind., before falling to No. 5 Notre Dame in the second round.
The winner of the CMU-MU game will take on the winner of Friday's second first-round match between Wisconsin and UW-Milwaukee.
