Teams Notes

Akron Game Notes
Currently second in the Mid-American Conference East Division at 7-7, Akron will face the fourth place Bulls who hold a 4-10 record. Ball State leads the league and West Division with a 12-2 record. Akron is 6-2 against the East Division this season with its only losses coming against Miami (Oct. 29) and Ohio (Nov. 6). UA sits sixth in the conference in digs averaging 14.90 per set. On an individual level, sophomore Chelsea Harvey leads UA in the backcourt staying in the sixth spot in the MAC averaging 4.16 digs per set. In strictly conference play the Zips are fifth league wide in blocks (1.78 B/S) and service aces (1.14 SA/S). Posting a 14-18 overall record in 2009 and 5-11 conference record the last two seasons, Akron's 15 wins this season and seven conference victories are the most during the tenure of third year head coach and MAC Coach of the Year candidate Ron Arenz. The conference mark is also the most any Zips team has posted since the 2003 season. Solid throughout the season on both sides of the ball, junior Courtney Jarvis has been the team leader in kills all year with 292 (3.04 K/S) and is second on the team in digs with 281 (2.93 D/S). Junior Tina Dimitrijevs is fifth in the league in hitting percentage striking a .344 in conference play and .354 through all matches. She is fifth in the MAC in blocks averaging .90 B/S.
Ball State

Ball State Game Notes
Ball State locked up at least a share of the 2010 MAC Regular Season Title and a first-round bye in the upcoming MAC Tournament with a pair of MAC West Division wins at Eastern Michigan (3-2) and at Central Michigan (3-1) last weekend. Junior middle blocker Kelsey Brandl leads the team in kills per set (3.24), hitting percentage (.342), blocks per set (0.85) and service aces (25). Freshmen outside hitters Whitney Heeres and Kylee Baker rank second (3.13) and third (2.99), respectively, on the team in kills per set. In the backcourt, senior libero Alyssa Rio ranks fourth nationally with her 5.79 digs-per-set average. As a team, the Cardinals are out-hitting their opponents .219 to .171 on the year, while holding a 13.68 to 11.60 advantage in kills per set.

Bowling Green

Bowling Green Game Notes
Bowling Green's regular season comes to a close this week as the Falcons play two final Mid-American Conference contests over the weekend. BGSU will play at Kent State Friday night at 7 p.m. and will follow that up with a contest at Ohio Saturday night at 7 p.m. Bowling Green is currently slotted into the No. 12 seed for the MAC Tournament and needs to win both contests and get some help to move up in the standings. With 421 digs this season, Ashley Dunn is about to post one of the top 10 single-season dig totals in program history. Angellette Love's total of 424 digs in 1992 is the 10th highest total in BGSU volleyball history. Freshman setter Laura Avila had an eye-popping 54 assists in the Falcons' three-set loss to Western Michigan. That total is the most for any BGSU player in a three-set match in the rally scoring era of collegiate volleyball (since 2001).

Buffalo Game Notes
Currently sitting as the No. 11 seed, Buffalo still has an outside shot at hosting a first-round match in the 2010 MAC Tournament. Second-year head coach Todd Kress has guided UB to 16 victories and needs one more win for the Bulls' most since joining the MAC in 1998. Buffalo ranks second in the MAC with a .171 opponent ATK% and 1.52 aces per set and is third with 1.99 blocks per set. Junior MB Abby Niekamp ranks fifth in the MAC with a .337 ATK%, and senior MB Kristin Bignell is third with 1.02 blocks per set.
 Central Michigan

Central Michigan Game Notes
Looking to solidify a higher seed in next week's Mid-American Conference Tournament, Central Michigan wraps up league play with road matches against Western Michigan and Northern Illinois this weekend. The Chippewas (13-13, 7-7 MAC) face Broncos (20-8, 10-4 MAC) on Friday at 6 p.m., and ends conference play against the Huskies (24-5, 10-4 MAC) on Saturday at 8 p.m. CMU is guaranteed to host a first round match in the MAC Tournament on Nov. 16. The Maroon and Gold rank first in conference offense (.245) and defense (.191), third in blocks (1.98) and aces (1.22). Junior Kaitlyn Schultz ranks second in MAC hitting percentage (.383) and ninth in points (3.75), while senior Lauren Krupsky sits 10th in kills (3.22), sixth in aces (0.30) and seventh in points (3.84).

 Eastern Michigan

Eastern Michigan Game Notes
The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team closes out the 2010 regular season this weekend, Nov. 12-13, with a pair of critical road contests. With two matches still remaining, the Eagles are deadlocked in a three-way tie with Northern Illinois University and Western Michigan University for second place in the MAC West Division with a 10-4 record. Ball State University, which has clinched at least a share of the divisional title, sits atop the West with a 12-2 mark. Eastern Michigan topped the 75-dig mark again Friday, Nov. 5, posting 92 in a five-set loss to Ball State. The Eagles set the MAC season-high in digs when they tallied 146 against Western Michigan, Oct. 8. Not only did the dig total top the conference, it marked the highest team total in the nation this season. Senior Jenn Swartz became the EMU career leader in sets played earlier this season, she also ranks sixth in the EMU record book with 290 block assists and is 13th with 927 kills and 13th all-time in total attacks at 2,415. Junior Ashley Mason is now 532 assists shy of surpassing Camila Olaio (1998-02) for third place in the EMU record books. Mason has 3,499 assists in 371 career sets played. Meanwhile, junior Haley Stein passed 1,400 digs in her career and is third all-time with 1,436 digs.

Kent State

Kent State Game Notes
Kent State enters the weekend with a record of 11-18 overall and 4-10 in MAC play. The Golden Flashes snapped a seven-match losing streak with a four-set win over Buffalo Saturday. The team ranks last in the MAC in both kills and assists but has been successful defensively, ranking second in the conference in blocks with 2.41 per set. Junior Liva Brivule has paced the Kent attack with 3.47 kills per set and she also ranks fourth in the league in blocks with 0.94 per set. Overall, she ranks fourth in conference with 4.19 points per set. Head coach Glen Conley is in his fourth season at Kent State with a record of 60-63 and 411-245 in 21 total years as a head coach.

Miami Game Notes
Miami will conclude Mid-American Conference play on the road as it establishes its seeding for next week's MAC Tournament. The RedHawks will travel to rival Ohio on Friday for a 7 p.m. match. They will then move onto Kent State for a 7 p.m. contest on Saturday. Miami controls its own destiny in the quest for a home game in the first round of the MAC Tournament. The RedHawks currently sit in the eighth spot and cannot be moved out of that spot if they win their final two games thanks to tiebreakers. It was also another good week for senior Michele Metzler in her quest to gain 1,000 kills. She had 23 more in two matches to put herself at 962 with a minimum of four matches remaining on the schedule (pending advancement in the MAC Tournament).
 Northern Illinois

Northern Illinois Game Notes
NIU is in a three-way battle for the two at-large byes in the opening round of the conference tournament, and is still mathematically alive for a share of the West Division and overall MAC titles. The Red and Black sit percentage points behind Central Michigan as the No. 2 offense (.245) and own the No. 8 defense (.223). Freshmen Lauren Wicinski and Sarah Angelos have played major roles in the Huskies' success this season. Wicinski leads the conference in kills per set by nearly a full kill (5.00), aces by nearly a full tenth (0.42) and points per set by nearly a full point (5.74). Angelos sits at No. 7 in hitting percentage (.325). Junior setter Kristin Hoffman sits second in conference assists (11.85).

Ohio Game Notes
Ohio comes into the weekend with a one-game lead in the MAC East Division at 16-11 overall and 8-6 in league play. The Bobcats have made a late push by winning three of the team's last four matches. Ohio easily leads the MAC in blocks with 2.92 per set and ranks third with a .232 attack percentage. Senior Sue Jacobi's 4.26 kills per set ranks second in the conference while two other players lead the MAC in blocks. Junior Katie Post (1.35 blocks per set) and freshman Lexie Hartnett (1.07 per set) are first and second in the conference in that category. Head coach Ryan Theis is in his third year at the helm, leading Ohio to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and a 67-26 overall record.

Toledo Game Notes
Toledo closes out its regular-season schedule this weekend with a visit to MAC West Division leader Ball State (22-4, 12-2 MAC) on Thursday, Nov. 11 before hosting MAC East Division foe Buffalo (16-14, 4-10 MAC) on Saturday, Nov. 13. The Rockets currently stand as the No. 9 seed for the 2010 MAC Tournament and would visit No. 8 seed Miami in the first round on Tuesday, Nov. 16. For Toledo to host a home match, the Rockets would have to win one match this weekend and have the RedHawks lose both of their contests at Ohio and Kent State. UT dropped a pair of decisions last week at Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan with five of their six set losses coming by three points or less. The Rockets' matchup with the Eagles was especially close from a statistical standpoint. The Eagles edged the Rockets in attack percentage (.263-.258), kills (48-43) and aces (7-4), but UT held slight advantages in digs (65-64) and blocks (3-1). Sophomore OH Sondra Parys leads Toledo with 2.98 kills per set, while junior RSH Cassie Kleespies possesses a team-high .286 attack percentage. On the defensive side of the net, senior Katie Westerfeld has a team-high 4.00 digs per set with sophomore MB Bethany Irwin tallying a team-best 0.72 blocks per set.
 Western Michigan

Western Michigan Game Notes
The Western Michigan volleyball team ends the 2010 regular season hosting conference and state rivals Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. The Broncos are currently deadlocked with the Eagles in a three-way tie for second place in the MAC West in a battle for the three seed for the MAC Tournament. WMU hosts CMU on Friday at 6 p.m. and EMU on Saturday at 7 p.m. Friday's game precedes the WMU women's basketball team's season-opener with Eastern Illinois. Allyson Doyle's back-to-back double-doubles in WMU's 3-2 win over NIU and 3-1 win over Miami helped the senior outside hitter move up in the WMU record books. Doyle had 22 kills and 39 digs for her seventh and eighth double-doubles of the season and also added one block solo and three block-assists on the weekend. Her totals moved her up to 13 on the career kills list with 1,148, fourth in career digs at 1,573, sixth in block assists with 320 and eighth in total blocks with 336. Doyle also ranks sit in career attack attempts and needs just 72 to overtake Kim Lee (1989-92) for fifth all time and ranks seventh in WMU history in career kills-digs double-doubles with 44.
